Where do vegetarians get there proteins ?

PROTEIN BASICS: WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR PROTEIN?

“If you don’t eat meat, chicken, or fish, where do you get your protein?”
“You don’t eat dairy products or eggs either? How can you live without protein?”
“You can’t get enough protein on a vegan diet.”
“My doctor told me I could not stay healthy on a vegan diet”
“I tried a vegetarian diet, but I got sick.”
“I was on a vegetarian diet but I always felt tired. I needed more protein.”

Calculating Protein Requirements
Recently, studies on nitrogen balance provided more accurate ways to measure the body’s protein requirements. Joel Fuhrman, M.D. in his book Eat to Live writes that an easy way to calculate your own daily protein requirement according to the U.S. RDA is to multiply 0.36 (grams) by your body weight. That translates to about 44 grams for a 120-pound woman and 54 grams for a 150-pound male. In metric terminology the RDA is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight.

Brenda Davis, R.D., and Vesanto Melina, M.S., R.D., in their book Becoming Vegan consider 0.9 grams per kilogram of body weight to be more ideal for vegans eating whole plant foods such as legumes, whole grains, and vegetables. Multiplying 0.45 grams by your body weight in pounds will give you the approximate protein need for your body. These figures are a little higher than actual RDA requirements but were considered necessary as a safety factor to account for reduced digestibility of whole plant foods versus more refined foods such as tofu, textured soy protein, and meat substitutes.

With this slightly higher figure a 120-pound person would need 54 grams of protein daily and a 150-pound person needs 67.5 grams. Another way to calculate your RDA for protein is to take your weight in pounds and divide by 2.3 kg to determine your weight in kilograms. Then figure1 gram of protein for every kg of body weight. Those who include tofu, textured soy protein, meat substitutes, and refined grains will find 0.8 grams per kilogram of protein daily quite adequate.

Vegetarian Pancit, originally uploaded by museinthecity.

This morning I was checking my comments for this blog, and found these two questions from Tom LeDree. Tom is a blogging friend of mine, Tom LeDree.com Free Daily Inspirations, is his blog.

I know Tom from MyBlogLog. He saw my post on Protien in my Vegetarian Diet – Made Easy. Tom asked me two question we all would have, so it gave me the idea to post about A Simple Start For a Vegetarian LifeStyle.

Tom wrote…

This is really interesting. I have been thinking for a long time to become a vegetarian. The only problems I see with it for me are

1) Not knowing what meals to make

2) I regularly go round other peoples house for dinner and they would probably have to cook me something different to everyone else. Which I’m sure would annoy them!

Same questions I had, and many other’s thinking about going vegetarian I’m sure. I have been a vegetarian for about 15 years now, and was a body builder for most of it. I’ve recently started doing some more exploring as to what I want to add to my vegetarian menu.

I currently don’t get much of a thrill out of cooking as I do with doing Art and Blogging.
I am actually searching the net for blogs about what is good for us as vegetarians and meals we can make, food to consider adding to our lifestyle.

My diet is very simple, I would like to add more to it, more variety, not a lot but more. Like I said I don’t get a big thrill out of cooking, maybe you do.
I did enjoy helping to cook when I was married, but that is a different kind of experience. I am learning how cooking for myself can be a way of being loving and kind to myself, a Buddhist thing, loving kindness, we often forget to include ourself.

Right now I fix rice with black beans, or a potato or sweet potato with black beans or some sliced up an sauteed carrots, jalapenos and spinach. Plus I have carrots, brocoli, apples, bananas, sunflower seeds and peanuts in the house to munch on.

More and more though I have my Green Drinks, juice with a banana, spinach and blueberries, 2 -3 a day. You can Play with different juices, but the bananas and spinach are the base, then add other types of berries nuts, chard, cucumbers, etc…Put them all in a blender, blend and drink. Simple, easy and Great for us. A real [tag]SuperFood[/tag] !

Along with this I have Mangosteen Juice, 2-3 cap fulls a day, and two cap fulls a day of a Vitamin & Mineral Supreme 19 liquid I get from Hi Health.
Spirulina I have used for years, and use everyday too.

***Update, no longer using Mangosteen Juice or the Vitamin/Mineral Supreme 19. I am staying on with Spirulina though and adding FrequenSea, Marine Phytoplankton. Marine Phytoplankton has over 200+ micro algae. Where Spirulina is only one form and is a freshwater plant. Superfood – Marine Phytoplankton is over 400 times more Powerful than anything else on the planet. The Marine Phytoplankton rebuilds us at a cellular level. You can read more here about FreqeunSea, Marine Phytoplankton.

Here is a list of Super Foods by The Vegan Diet, that is very helpful.

Eating out

When I eat out, I usually have a bean burrito with halapinos and lots of salsa, or a veggy burger, cause I just like to keep it simple. Ok I Love Chines and Tia too ! There are salads and many many other choices, going to a veggy restaurant helps, but many restaurants are veggy conscious now and have at least a small selection. With friend’z who are’nt vegetarian you might be able to rotate going to a veggy restaurant one time and the next time to a restaurant of there choice.

I have trained with weights for many years and researched a lot about how to eat for gaining mass and lowering body fat. From this I have learned that having 4, 5 to 6 smaller meals a day is far better for our bodies.

Eating at your friend’z homes, yes bit unconvertable at first, but good friends adjust quickly. I started by just eating the veggy’s they had with the meal. Then I started bringing something with me. Once they learn you are vegetarian, when they ask you for dinner they will usually ask what they could fix for you, very nice of them !

I am enjoying a search for what I would like to add to my vegetarian live, so I have started compiling a list of veggy blogs and websites for myself and everyone to discovering new ideas. I will be gathering some Video’s to so check back.

My suggestion, enjoy a mix of vegetarian, vegan and raw vegan, to live in a state of Super Health !!!******

Thank you for your question Tom, hope this helps you and others !
If anyone has more questions, let me know.

Many Blessing’s My Friend’z !!!******

“Most people seem to think that plants are devoid of protein. Even many ardent vegetarians believe that they have to eat beans to make sure they get enough protein. The truth is, all plant foods have plentiful protein. Take a look at the following chart.”This Got a Big Wow…Cool, from me ! <— Look at the small amount we need.

I have been a vegetarian for about fifteen years. I really haven’t studied in as much depth like this untill now, just didnt eat meat. Now that I have been single again for five + years, (that’s right, no one cookin for me ), I have started lookin more into it to find different things to eat, meals, types of vegetarian foods. What a Huge World it is ! Infromation like this helps me get more of a perspective.

I live by myself and my son Joshua is here part of three days a week, and I want good stuff for us to eat, thus my further reseach. ( Farther sounds like father, and just dose not sound right to me, never did – a little side note ) …

This morning I made friend’s with santaram, who is another MyBlogLog member. He has a Great blog called Health Corner, healthy tips, surgeries, thyroid, home remedies ayurveda.

Sabro has written an informative simple outline of some benefits of being vegetarian.

From his blog…

“Vegetarians have lower rates of some cancers, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and non-insulin-dependent diabetes. A study of nearly 2,000 vegetarians and part-time vegetarians conducted by German cancer researchers found eating little or no meat cut death rates from heart and circulatory disease in half and deaths from cancer by 25 to 50 percent.”

Read more here, Being Vegetarian .

Along with these health benefits there is another benefit to being vegetarian. This other benefit I learned from Parmahansa Yogananda.

It is really pretty basic and logical once you think about it. That is, it takes energy for our bodies to digest food. It takes energy to dive deep in meditation.

Meat takes much more energy and time to digest, thus, less energy for diving deeper into meditation.

Something else I learned from Yogananda is that our bodies were not made for digesting meat, humans are vegetarians, not meat eaters. Our teeth, stomach and intestines were designed like those of vegetarian animals. Whoe, very interesting ! This fascinated me !

Here is a weight losing tip. Stop eating when you Feel that you are Starting to get full. Simple information that works, takes practice.

I have found truth in this advice through my own practice, knowing comes through ones own practice, the true testing ground.

Note – Allways being our own best friend, when we are exploring and practicing new things.

When we notice we are off track, just get back on, and keep going.

I have a brand new friend on Flickr, who has a blog with some Wonderful picture’s of vegetarian meals, ???? ?’s Blog.
Have Fun !!!******
